Data-driven collection analysis using the WorldCat search API: Japanese manga collection

While information technology has brought about significant improvement in development and dissemination of information and resources to library users, it has also made librarians’ activities easier and more effectively. For example, application program interface (API) allows them to perform some menial repetitive tasks in an automated way and facilitates data-driven decision making.

This presentation introduces a simple but effective method to analyze collective collections in the WorldCat database using OCLC Connexion and the WorldCat Search API. It focuses on Japanese Manga collections as a use case and explains how this data-driven assessment method reveals some interesting patterns and characteristics of Yale’s Japanese Manga collection as well as of the entire collection within WorldCat in comparison. Potential findings include unique materials at Yale, libraries with largest collection, and number of titles by format and by year. Limitations and challenges of this method pertaining to Japanese manga collections will also be discussed.

Still, this method proves to be effective to get a bigger picture of the collections quickly allowing librarians to see strengths and weaknesses of their own local collections and to make necessary collection development decisions, metadata enhancements and instructional improvements. It is also possible to utilize it for cooperative collection development within regional and international communities. The goal of this presentation is to inspire library professionals to take advantage of powerful web services like APIs and to encourage them to actively utilize this collection analysis method.

WorldCat Search API
